In Sub-Saharan Africa, about 35% of food gets lost before it’s sold. Globally, a whopping 1.3 billion metric tonnes of food, worth nearly US $940 billion every year, go to waste because of not handling it properly and losing it after harvesting.
In Sub-Saharan Africa, about 35% of food gets lost before it’s sold.Some food chains suffer even higher losses. For example, with mangoes, between 40-50% are lost after harvesting. And if leafy vegetables lose more than 3% of their original fresh weight, they can’t be sold anymore. Globally, a whopping 1.3 billion metric tonnes of food, worth nearly US $940 billion every year, go to waste because of not handling it properly and losing it after harvesting.
But, solutions like solar-powered cold storage rooms might not be available or affordable in some areas.
